GIBEON METEORITE – AN OTHERWORLDLY SCREAM

Recovered from the edge of the Kalahari Desert, Gibeon iron meteorites are the bounty of a meteorite shower that occurred thousands of years ago when an enormous iron mass originating from the asteroid belt slammed into Earth's upper atmosphere, whereupon it exploded apart and descended onto what is now Namibia. Generations ago, indigenous tribesmen recovered the metallic surface specimens to make spear points and other tools. Their ancestors used metal detectors to harvest the meteorites and the site is now exhausted.

This totem-like specimen benefitted greatly from the location and size of its delimiting scoops--which are the result of shallow basins that slowly grew in size over thousands of years while exposed to the elements. A highly animated surface of swirling ripples and ridges in a faint russet patina further accent this otherworldly evocation of Edvard Munch's "The Scream."

Accompanied by a custom pedestal, this is a notable offering of a celebrated iron meteorite. 548 x 239 x 211mm (21.5 x 9.33 x 8.33 inches) and 81.369 kilograms (179.25 pounds). Provenance: The Macovich Collection.
